Energy Drinks: Good or Bad for You?

Image
I love it when I see kids outside on the playground on the swings, running around playing tag, kicking the soccer ball...and drinking a high sugar energy drink containing 500 ml of liquid! I never understood why parents gave their kids drinks like Powerade or Gatorade when they've finished a 40 minute game of soccer where they played half the time (20 minutes of activity), or they were at the pool swimming for leisure and feel thirsty. Water is pretty good for thirst if you ask me! With some value, of course, energy drinks have exploded in the marketplace and are commonly found in vending machines in schools, rec centers, and malls. It seems to me that giving these options to our kids as a refreshing beverage after a short (less than 60 minutes of vigorous cardiovascular activity) is negligent. I would love to share here, a wonderful journal article from the The Journal of The International Society of Sports Nutrition:  http://www.jissn.com/content/10/1/1 Here is a di...

Easy and Healthy Eating!

Image
Don't let sugar cravings, carb craziness, salt mania, and fat frenzy get you off track! Start your day right with some yummy and healthy food, and get on the right track for the day. Waffle Taco: 1 whole wheat toaster waffle 1/2 tbsp peanut butter 1/4 C slightly crushed blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries Prepare the waffle according to the package directions. Spread the peanut butter on the waffle. Cup the waffle in your hand, add the berries, then squeeze lightly. Think of it as a berry breakfast taco. I  like to use CHIA or hempseed waffles. Tropical Fruit Smoothie The sweet, colorful flesh of mango and papaya makes a super refreshing smoothie that is low in fat and full of flavor. A vitamin C powerhouse, this thick, tangy smoothie packs a nutritional punch, making it the perfect rejuvenator, whether enjoyed during breakfast or as a midafternoon snack. Try adding a splash of coconut milk for a colada-style shak...

Choosing a Personal Trainer

Image
How to Choose Your Personal Trainer! That can be tough;  you shouldn't just go with the first one that pops onto your radar, you should be picky! I recently had the opportunity to meet with some ladies who wanted a trainer, and they were planning on shopping around. I thought that was a great idea! In fact, I just wrote an article on How To Choose a Personal Trainer which is published in February's issue of Alive magazine . Obviously I am all for people shopping around; I do it all the time for services! However, I never even got the chance to meet in person these ladies, as they jumped into a plan with another trainer before our appointment had a chance to happen. Oh well, too bad. My point is, shop around, ask questions, and get an idea of what your trainer can offer you, what their credentials are, if they are certified through  a reputable agency, and what their agenda is. I would love to hear what you thin of the article ! All the best, Nicole
