Age is also a factor. Exercise During Pregnancy?</title><content type='html'>&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;This is a question that many first time mothers may ask themselves. Is it safe for me to exercise while I'm pregnant?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;This is not a black and white answer, it depends on many factors.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;First of all, is your pregnancy "the norm", or do you have complications? If you do, you need to seek medical advice from your doctor or midwife to find out if it's safe for you.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;Also, were you an exerciser before you became pregnant? If you were an avid runner, biker or hiker, there's no reason for you to stop simply because you're pregnant. If you have the all clear from your medical professional, you can continue to enjoy non-contact sports and actitivies that you enjoyeed before. Keep in mind that as you become larger, your center of gravity will shift so balance activities will be a lot more difficult to excel at.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;What makes you feel good? As you get closer to your due date, the buoyancy of water may make you feel much better than the pounding of pavement. You may want to switch up your exercise mediums to a lower version as your pregnancy progresses.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;What about &lt;strong&gt;strength training&lt;/strong&gt;?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;This too is fine, as long as you stay within certain limitations.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;Keep yourself away from machines that might move or fall on you without warning, keep your body alignment correct, and give yourself extra room for your belly. You can still lift weights, but the pressure of certain exercises with weights may cause you to feel pressure in other areas of your body that were not supposed to be feeling pressure. Just be careful, and use general caution. There are many exercises you can do to improve core strength, but here are a few of my favourites:&lt;br /&gt;· Quadruped: on your hands and knees, raise your opposite arm and opposite leg parallel to the floor. Keep your abs held in tight and hold for 5-10 seconds. Repeat on other side. Do 5-10 each day.&lt;br /&gt;· Leg drops: on your back, legs raised up above your hips. Keeping your abs held in tightly, slowly drop one leg toward the floor. If you have back issues, keep one foot on the floor and switch them up. Repeat this 10-15 times slowly.&lt;br /&gt;· Back extensions: lying on the floor or exercise ball face down, slowly raise up your torso, keeping your hands on the floor (easier) or by your sides (raised and harder). Keeping your head in line with your spine, repeat up to 20 times.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. &lt;strong&gt;Don’t slouch&lt;/strong&gt;!&lt;br /&gt;When you’re walking around or sitting/standing, remember to stand up straight, like your mother always told you! Holding yourself tall will force you to engage your abdominals. Keeping your abs tight constantly will help build up strength in your midsection, ultimately helping to protect your back.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. &lt;strong&gt;Watch your lifting technique/awareness&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When lifting heavy or bulky items, make an action plan before you start. One of the entrees had over &lt;strong&gt;1000 calories&lt;/strong&gt;!!! But do you ever feel unusually full when you leave the restaurant?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At home, you might not have white bread with butter, or a greasy appetizer, or that main course steak that's over 12 ounces.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's great to dine out and enjoy yourself, but are you going overboard?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eating at home gives you more control over what you're ingesting. It really gets your body going after a long night of fasting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You should try to include protein at every meal; breakfast included. I don't mean greasy sausages or bacon, but instead, some nut butter on your whole grain toast, or some boiled eggs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Breakfast is your first opportunity to eat well in the day, so make sure to include some form of fruit as well. Why not stop yourself in your tracks?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mindless munching gets you nowhere...good that is. It will help you gain weight and see less results than you'd like even after hard workouts day after day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How to stop:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;Eat at regular intervals throughout the day to stave off hunger, and make sure you're hydrated. When you're thirsty, you may mistake that for hunger and eat instead of drink.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;Drink water regularly&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;Don't buy junk! If it's not in your house, you probably won't be eating it.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;Stay focussed: what are your goals?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;Write it down. Even here on the North Shore we have four clubs. Other circuit training facilities such as “Figure It Out” and “30 Minute Hit” have also infiltrated the market with other types of circuit programs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Circuit training is so popular because it is effective. One 30 minute session can burn up to 200 calories, besides giving you cardiovascular training and toning your muscles. If you engage in circuit training three times per week and burn 200 calories each time, that is 600 calories per week burned. Also, fitting everything in to one workout gives you time to enjoy the rest of your day and lets you focus on other things in your busy life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you can’t see yourself joining any gym, let alone a circuit training facility, then why not create your own circuit at home? With very little equipment and space you can design a program that will start shedding the inches in as little as 4-6 weeks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To begin, you will need some light hand weights (soup cans work too!), a step (or stairs), a mat or thick towel, and some energy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Start out with 8-10 stations and build up to 10-12 as you gain endurance and strength. Begin with larger muscle groups and work your way down to smaller muscle groups. Complete the workout with a few abdominal exercises on the floor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Work Out:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Warm up for 5 minutes: step touch, knee raises, marching on the spot&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Station 1: Squats&lt;br /&gt;Station 2: Knee Raises&lt;br /&gt;Station 3: Push Ups&lt;br /&gt;Station 4: Jumping Jacks&lt;br /&gt;Station 5: Rear Lunges&lt;br /&gt;Station 6: Step ups with weight&lt;br /&gt;Station 7: Bent Over Row with weight&lt;br /&gt;Station 8: Jogging in Place&lt;br /&gt;Repeat&lt;br /&gt;Ab crunches: 2 sets of 20&lt;br /&gt;Ab side to side crunches: 2 sets of 20&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cool Down: gentle marching, deep breathing, gentle step touch&lt;br /&gt;Stretch: Hold each stretch for 15-30 seconds. Stretch all major muscles groups exercised.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the comfort of your own home with very little equipment, you can get a great workout in and still have plenty of time to burn. Maybe we hope to be a parent, a spouse, a little skinnier, a little healthier, or whatever it may be. We all have aspirations to do or be something, but how many of us are reaching those goals? How many of us are living the way we really want to be living?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;We say we'll lose weight- "I'll start the new diet on Monday." &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;We say we'll start working out- "I don't have time."&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;We say we'll start doing this or that but why aren't we?
